And I think a good call considering the flooding, rain and downed trees. I definitely think we would have had fatalities had the City attempted to ignore the storm.

From Riverside Park I noticed some thick smoke coming from the NJ side. I got to a high vantange on the NY side and witnessed a raging house fire.

Looks to have started in the yard and spread to the main house.

Firemen vented the roof but the strong wind sucked the fire throughout the house.

Eventually they got the fire in the yard under control and then dumped water on top of the house for 1 hr. It sucks this happened on Father's Day, but hopefully no one was hurt and the fire did not spread to any of the nearby houses.

For at least 3 years there has been a feral colony of Monk Parakeets living in the upper reaches of Riverside Park. About 3 weeks ago I received a report of two men, rigging a rope around the branches of the tree, pulling it through and destroying their nest. Who or why such people act they way they do, is beyond me to understand. But I do know this: most birds are smarter than most people, and these guys escaped and just relocated. Through a combination of intuition and good sense, I relocated these awesome guys, a few blocks south, in a much more secure location.

Here I found an emerging colony of at least 6 different birds amongst 3 different nests.

And to the sick fucks who tried to exploit these wonderful and free animals I say this:
You can kill a bird. You can kill me. And one day, they will probably even kill the internet.

But you cant kill Love.

There's a special type of ignorance that exists here in Harlem. It has to do with the belief that by keeping Harlem a violent cauldron of suffering, that it will somehow retain its "Blackness" and therefore stem the inexorable tide of gentrification. While overlooking the obvious self-destructive momentum that such attitudes imbue, its the fact that this belief is "unassailable" because its considered racist for non-Blacks to confront it. But I have and always will say, "Fuck that." Seriously, is the artist really saying that white reporters should be shot for reporting on the fact that the "gladiator" mentality that is behind so many of the intended and unintended shootings is wrong? Is he really defending the "right" of men of color to wantonly shoot each other and whoever gets in the way all in the name of some distorted masculine identity? As an artist myself, Im all for expression and controversy. That is why if Jay West would have painted this on a canvas or a private wall, I'd not say a word about it. But this is painted on the Adam Clayton Powell State Office Building. Im sure ACP Jr. is rolling over in his grave right now.

One of the things about Harlem that I'll never get used to are the random hair extensions that one encounters around town. Most of the time Im too grossed out to take a pic, but as I walked on 125th the other day, the right combination of elements caught my eye. There seemed to be a story here, although its real truth is unknown for its owner never showed. The story I made up for it is that a cross-dressing bouncer tried to rob a 99C store in a green coin operated jeep liberty. Needless to say it didnt go his way so he was forced to doff his coif and hoof it out of town. I call it:

One of the nicest things about Harlem is its many modes of transit. Metro North at 125 has always provided a convenient escape route from the sweltering City. Using this method to make jaunts, forays and the occasional outing to Upstate Ive managed to finally get a good series of the abandoned powerstation in Glenwood.

The Mystery of the Headless Squirrel Solved(Almost)!

I had a list of suspects:
A stone Eagle come to life,

The Skull and Bones (Secret Societies still tryin to keep they eye on me),

And this gnarly hawk, caught fleeing from the scene!

I dont ever think I've seen an adult with yellow eyes before.

My investigation will now focus on this prime suspect, last seen heading north on Convent Avenue. All squirrels, pigeons, rats, mice, sparrows, crows, and teacup Pomeranians are advised to remain indoors until this killer is corralled!

The Mystery of the Headless Squirrel

Only the severest case of cabin fever could drive me out in this weather. But sure enough, there I was, in St. Nicholas Park, scanning the bleak terrain for any signs of life. It was so cold, even the trash couldnt blow around, so it sat there, mutely fluttering. It was around that point that a hawk flew down to a tree stump just up ahead of me. I could tell right away it was the large juvenile I'd photographed all Winter. Steadily, I drew closer and tried to stop the camera from shaking as a I shivered violently. (note to self, carry tripod on really cold days)

It rose up for a kill shot!

It was at this point that I realized the hawk hadnt actually killed that squirrel, but rather discovered it there, frozen stiff. I surmise an adult rth may have killed it and left it for the youngster although what happened next surprised me more. It seems that in the act of re-killing this squirrel it had landed on top of it and now both were slipping off the tree!

And so that leads to The Mystery of the Headless Squirrel: Who killed this squirrel and why? I later climbed the tree and found the main incisors of the rodent and some more bone and blood. The hawk that made this kill carefully decapitated the squirrel and left it in a nook of a tree, where this youngster found it. As the squirrel jerky lay there, I fully expected the juvy to jump down and reclaim its quarry, but in fact it just hopped over to another branch and fluffed out its down. From the pigeon feather on its beak, it seems likely that it had recently fed. It looks as if, despite the cold, this is one well taken care of hawk.

So I left the hawk and the headless squirrel to each other and headed off towards home, herbal tea and pix of squirrel-icide.

As progress continues on the Aloft site, some carpenters are upset about the use of non-union labor on this job. All politics aside, the rat is kinda cool, although in these tough times, Unions have to be flexible if they are to survive.
My criticism of the site is not so much the use of unions, as much as the lack of African-American workers on the site. From what I can see they are either white, or Central American.

It's hard to believe that its been 1 year since I started Harlem Hybrid. Since that time we've seen a bunch of people get shot, a building collapse, I briefly became the face of gentrification, some great randomness here and here, a Black man got elected president, and recently the passing of Michael Jackson. Its hard to image ever surpassing these moments in the coming year. Harlem, you may have set the bar too high! But if there's one thing that I've learned, its that Harlem always surprises...mostly in a good way. Last but not least, I would like to personally thank all of the great people of Harlem for their support, love and respect. It is my only hope that I can give as much back to you!

Harlem Real Estate...WTF!?! (Part 1)

If you consider the NY Times hatchet job on the low-end Brownstone market Part 1, then this would in fact be Part 2. Be that as it may, these two posts will concentrate on two other aspects of the Harlem Real Estate market: New Construction and Commercial vacancy.

This first part, New Construction, breaks down the states of some high profile projects, all in various stages of completion, and forecasts what the next 2 years may be like.
Throughout Central Harlem there is much evidence of the two sides of the New Construction market...High End (still much inventory here),

and affordable (selling).

In my own backyard, the Aloft site is really picking up steam.
Clearly visible is the massive poured concrete and rebar foundation...almost now at street level.

This building is seriously gangsta. Built more like a bridge than a hotel, definitely made to last. In any event, I see jobs, activity and progress here on a daily basis...and in 2 years this thing will be open!
Just down the block is the 2280 FDB development. Having made much progress since its wall issues a while back.

About to top off soon, probably 18 months till move-in, barring any more catastrophes. Also in doubt are the relatively high psf prices, but more on that later. Further down 123rd, is Windows on 123rd, and they are nearly finished. This project boasts big windows, high psf, and a optional parking spot that comes with a Smart Car.

Further down FDB on 122, this new "townhouse."

While across the street is a dead project,

On 120th is this corner project, moving along in fits and starts.

On 116th, I checked out Graceline Courts (the cantilever building)...

Over on 110th and 5th Ave., The Museum of African Art begins to take form across from Central Park.

Facing another Park, closings are starting to come in for this huge project.

So what does the future hold? There's still a lot of inventory to be moved in the next two years, but buyer demand slowly creeping back. However, maybe not at the $700-$800 psf range developers are seeking. In any event, I call bottom on this recession...it might take a little while longer to turn around, but too many big time players have invested way too much for this to fail and After all this is Harlem!

Some pix of the filming of "Fringe." I dont watch much tv, so I dont know if its good...but it does have the talented NYC native, Kirk Acevedo (Laguardia HS grad).
